Magnificent Octopus by sculptor Matt Buckley from the EDGE collection. The octopus is one of the strangest and most fascinating creatures on the planet and is steeped in mythology and legend. Extremely intelligent and resourceful, the octopus is regarded as a divine protector in many cultures - particularly South America and the Polynesian Islands. In popular culture though, the octopus usually plays the villain - in Jules Verne's 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, Spiderman's nemesis Dr Octopus from Marvel and in Disney's The Little Mermaid - none so fearsome though as the Kraken a giant mythical octopus that has featured in many stories such as Pirates of the Caribbean.
