Pre-Owned Rolex Datejust Watches

History of the Datejust

Launched in 1945, the Rolex Datejust was the world's first self-winding mechanical watch with a date window. It was originally released for men however it soon became available in mid-size and also for women. The range was created using the typical Oyster style bracelet along with the new Jubilee bracelet that Rolex developed for the Datejust. The watch was fitted with a coin-edged bezel which is known nowadays as the fluted bezel. Rolex decided to position the date window at 3 o'clock because it would be easily readable if the watch was slightly protruding from the wearer's sleeve. They also altered the date feature to alternate between black and red.

Evolution of the Datejust

The Datejust was the first timepiece to feature the Cyclops around the date window as this was fitted to the watch in 1954. This was added in order to magnify the date by 2.5 times. Rolex released a new version of the Datejust called the 'Thunderbird' with the only difference being that the Turn-O-Graph bezel was fitted. In the '70s a new movement was built to accommodate for the quick-set feature it was then given a smaller profile with a new case and new dial. The plastic acrylic crystal was also soon replaced by sapphire crystal. Rolex released the Datejust II in 2009 featuring a larger case at 41 millimetres and also featured an updated movement. The fluted bezel remains part of the trademark design as a homage to the history of this iconic watch.

Over 50 years since the release of this classic timepiece, it still remains a very highly sought after watch in the Oyster range and comes in many different styles.

Datejust in Popular Culture

Just like the Submariner, this watch has appeared in many movies such as Patrick Bateman wears a Datejust with two tone Jubilee bracelet in the film American Psycho. It also appeared in another of Brett Easton Ellis' novels, the movie The Informers. Every character wears a Rolex Datejust and even a Submariner can be noticed on the wrist of one character. Paul Newman, who is known for wearing a Rolex Daytona, sports a Rolex Datejust in the 1986 film The Colour of Money.
