First introduced in 1955, the GMT Master was designed by Rolex to suit the demands of pilots flying from one time zone to another. This watch was produced by Rolex after airline company Pan American World Airways (Pan Am) asked them to create a watch which could display two time zones simultaneously because of increasing flying times and distances by pilots. The GMT Master then became the official watch of Pan Am and many other airlines.
The newly developed additional hour hand could be used to keep track of a second time zone so that pilots could use the hand to display Greenwich Mean Time which is what gives the GMT Master its name.
Even though GMT was replaced by UTC (Coordinated Universal Time) in 1972, Rolex have continued to use the name GMT Master for its watch.
