In 1970, watchmakers from Japan started to take over the watch market with the sudden surge of the quartz watch. Consequently, Rolex developed a new line of watches, known as the Oysterquartz, in order to move into the quartz market.
In 1977 the Oysterquartz Datejust and Day-Date were released to market containing the first and only in-house quartz movement Rolex produced which took 5 solid years of research and testing.
Consumers loved the modern, angled look to the case and is arguably the best finished case and distinctive bracelet that Rolex watch ever made. However the watch was more popular in Asia and USA than in Europe and after less than 30 years, Rolex decided to discontinue the entire quartz range in 2001.
The Oysterquartz is deemed extremely rare as there was only around 25,000 watches manufactured.
