After the introduction of the Submariner, Rolex felt the need to create something more sophisticated and in 1967, the first Rolex Sea Dweller was launched. It was designed specifically for deep sea diving with older models being water resistance up to 610 metres but most recent models can be water resistant up to 3900 metres.
The 16600 Sea Dweller is an automatic dive watch introduced to the public in 1978. The main differences from the Submariner are that the Sea Dweller has a bigger case and thicker sapphire crystal glass. It also does not feature a Cyclops lens used to magnify the date for easy read. The Sea Dweller is the only Rolex model which features a date window without a Cyclops. This range of watch is only available black unidirectional rotating bezel and black dial.
In summary the Sea Dweller is in theory, the bigger brother to the Submariner due to its heavier and tougher case/bracelet.
